Today in Sports History [8/30/1990] – Pop and Son [Griffey]
Ken Griffey & Ken Griffey Jr become 1st father & son to play on same team (Seattle Mariners), both single in 1st inning.
The older Griffey signed with the team the day before, after he was released by the Cincinnati Reds. His son, Ken Griffey Jr., was Seattle’s bright young star back then. I think he went on to have a pretty decent career, including a run for Presidency in ’96 and a video game that is still one of the best of all-time.
The father-son duo would go on to hit back-to-back home runs in a game for Seattle later that season. Craig Griffey, the other son of Ken Sr., also played for the Mariners in the team’s farm system. He played a few games with his brother in the Cactus League but never got the call up to the majors.
