Game Preview: Green Bay Packers AT San Francisco 49ers

Thoughts off the top of Bacardi’s Dome:

The Packers are in serious trouble for this game. As witnessed first hand last January, the Packers will struggle to defend San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The Packers did nothing to upgrade their middle linebackers this offseason, and it’ll show against run option QBs like Kaep. Additionally, Green Bay’s best cornerback, Casey Heyward, is also out for a month, so that’ll mean juicier matchups for Anquan Boldin & Vernon Davis.

Offensively, the Packers will have a somewhat different look with the addition of rookie running back Eddie Lacy. The former ‘Bama star will add a new dimension to the offense, but still look for the Pack to pass 60% of their offensive plays. Defensively, the 49ers defensive line is THAT much older and lost considerable depth when super-sub Ricky Jean Francois left in the offseason. The 49ers secondary could also be in trouble with the loss of Dashon Goldson at free safety and the few injuries they’ve sustained to their cornerbacks. Will former Raider stud Nnamdi Asomugha rebound and shine in his new role as their nickel corner?

This game should mirror last year’s playoff game: I expect a close game in the first half, but with the 49ers ultimately gaining control in the 3rd quarter to ride to a somewhat easy victory. Conferences can’t be won in the 1st week, but fear can be spread among the other 14 teams. After this weekend, San Francisco will be the heavy favorite to return to the Super Bowl.
